Zaldy Co’s Resignation: A Political Sacrifice?

The recent resignation of Congressman Zaldy Co as Chairman of Appropriations panels has sent shockwaves through Philippine politics they same day of Iglesia ni Cristo National Rally for Peace.

With speculations rife that Speaker Martin Romualdez was the intended target for resignation, many are drawing biblical parallels between this political maneuver and the infamous moment when Pontius Pilate chose to release Barabbas over Jesus Christ. This supposed “offering” comes in the wake of a massive peace rally organized by the Iglesia ni Cristo, which drew millions to Quirino Grandstand, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao.

A Biblical Paradox in Philippine Politics

In the biblical account, Pilate allowed the people to decide between sparing Jesus or Barabbas, a known criminal. The crowd, swayed by hidden political interests, called for Jesus’ crucifixion while Barabbas walked free. Although, comparing Jesus to Co is a huge stretch for hos own good. Just for analogy sake, he did say that he would want to follow the footsteps of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino Saint.

As this AKO BICOL Partylist Representative Co steps down, the question arises: Is he the sacrificial lamb being offered to pacify the growing unrest against the Marcos-Romualdez camp? Or is he simply a scapegoat meant to divert attention from deeper systemic corruption?

Marcos Jr.’s Alleged Corruption: The People Speak

President Bongbong Marcos’ administration has been under fire for various corruption allegations, ranging from questionable government contracts to misallocation of public funds. Dissatisfaction among Filipinos has been mounting, with critics accusing the administration of prioritizing political dynasties over national interest. The INC-led peace rally, one of the largest in recent history, symbolizes the public’s frustration with the government’s current trajectory.

The Impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte: A Strategic Power Play?

Another burning issue adding fuel to this political fire is the alleged attempt by Congress to oust Vice President Sara Duterte. The Duterte-Marcos alliance, once thought to be solid, is no longer existent. The growing tension suggests that factions within the administration are seeking to remove Duterte from the equation to consolidate power further within the Romualdez-Marcos bloc.

The Marcoleta Removal from QUADCOM: Silencing Opposition?

The removal of Congressman Rodante Marcoleta from the Quad-Committee (QUADCOM) is another questionable move, raising suspicions of a deeper political cleansing. Marcoleta, known for his aggressive stance against corruption, has been one of the loudest voices questioning government irregularities. His removal suggests a systematic effort to silence dissenting voices, much like how critics of the Marcos regime were silenced in the past. Marcoleta happens to be a member of the INC and the rally worked in his advantage as he was given the stage to air his sentiments.

The People’s Verdict: More Rallies, More Resistance

The Iglesia ni Cristo’s massive demonstration is only the beginning. More protests and political movements are expected as the Filipino people refuse to be mere spectators in the unfolding drama of their nation’s politics. If history has taught us anything, it is that when people unite against tyranny and corruption, change becomes inevitable.

Zaldy Co’s resignation, while seemingly an individual political decision, reflects a broader crisis within the current administration. Whether he is a willing participant in this political charade or a mere pawn remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: The Filipino people are watching, and they refuse to be silent.

Will the Marcos administration continue to sidestep accountability, or will this modern-day “Pontius Pilate moment” mark the beginning of their reckoning?

And that's Inside My Mind Now! Any questions?
